What a first class jerk he was!! I will say that final twist that unveils the killer was jaw dropping. I did not see it coming at all.
The possibilities seem endless. Mar 04, Debbie Lester rated it really liked it. Swanson does a wonderful job of meshing her dime store theme with other plot elements to create interesting directions for this series.
Her latest idea of using the store as a gathering place for community clubs is featured when murder ends up being the subject of the latest book club meeting.
Swanson has a way of writing that gathers the reader in and keeps them so interested they can't Denise Swanson continues her Deveraux Dime Store mystery series with her latest book, Dead Between the Lines.
Swanson has a way of writing that gathers the reader in and keeps them so interested they can't put it down. A very good addition to the series.
Denise Swanson always delivers a great read, so I wasn't concerned about that. The Deveraux Dime Store series is quite different from her Scrumble River books and it's interesting to see how each new book changes the direction of the series.
This time readers have the pleasure of reading not only a good murder mystery, but one with a reading related theme as well.
Having the book club meeting in the dime store provided a great avenue for this mystery. I loved the idea that Swanson was able to add that element to give the story even more momentum.
As usual I enjoyed Dev very much. She is a great heroine. She has that spark of curiosity that comes across as more of inquisitiveness.
It isn't annoying or pretentious. When she starts asking questions she doesn't seem like someone suspects need to worry about.
She just seems like your average young woman, wondering about things, not a detective. It works for her very well.
I thought Swanson did a great job of making this heroine attuned to people and able to get information others might not be able to. I love Dev's love life as well.
It's a triangle for sure. She has feelings for Noah, but she also likes Jake. Who will she choose? Maybe we will find out in future books. For now she's dating both of them.
Not something I think is necessarily realistic when it comes to men who know about each other, but it goes along with the plot. That long distance relationship stuff is for the birds though, so I think it's Noah who will win out.
The mystery was well written and had some edge to it. The guest author for the book club gathering has written a scathing book of poetry that has tempers on the rise.
After having words with several book club members the author ends up dead right in front of Dev's store. I liked the way Dev gets right into the fray of finding out who did it.
The suspects were aplenty and the motives were varied and interesting. Not Swanson's strongest effort, but definitely worth the time to try to figure out.
What I didn't like: There wasn't much I didn't like, but it didn't grab me like some of Swanson's books do. It was a good book for sure, just not my favorite of the series, to date.
If you have read the other books in this series and others by this author, you know how good she is.
This is a good addition to the series and continues to move the series forward at a good clip. Looking forward to the next one.
Mar 10, OpenBookSociety. Brought to you by OBS reviewer Beth dead-between-the-lines-devereauxs-dime-store-mystery-denise-swansonDev Sinclair has opened her shop to local clubs in the past, but the first meeting of the Stepping Out Book Club ends with the guest speaker storming out in anger, and with murder.
With her shop involved, Dev is already drawn into the investigation. Her assistant Xylia is a member of the book club, and involved as well.
Dev has to balance business, investi http: Dev has to balance business, investigation, and two hopeful suitors, along with the care of her grandmother, and cat sitting duties.
The solution is to keep Tsar at the store, but murder intervenes. With fun and fascinating characters the author gives us a lively mystery with many twists and turns.
Fun witty dialogue and a fast moving plot keep the reader engaged, and enjoying the ride. Mystery lovers, cat lovers, and those who like some humor and romance mixed in with their mystery will enjoy both this book and the series.
I know I am hooked. Feb 26, Book of Secrets rated it it was amazing. A small town book club meeting gone awry, dark secrets meant to stay buried, and murder!
On the evening the Stepping Out Book Club held its meeting, things go terribly wrong. The guest speaker, a local poet, turns out to be a misogynistic jerk who manages to offend everyone.
He storms out in a huff A small town book club meeting gone awry, dark secrets meant to stay buried, and murder!
She also gets some help from the two men in her life — U. Marshal Jake and Dr. Both guys have a thing for Dev, and she kind of has a thing for both of them, which complicates things.
It was a fast-paced and exciting mystery, and I was rather surprised to learn who the killer was. This is the third book in the series, though it could be read stand alone.
Recommended to fans of cozy mysteries who like a healthy dose of romance mixed in. Review copy from the publisher Mar 10, Elizabeth rated it it was amazing.
This book has got your cozy mystery who did it and romance too. Devereaux "Dev" Sinclair runs an old fashion five-and-dime store and takes care of her grandmother, and trying to make ends meet.
Dev trying to make ends meet opens up her store to several clubs. During the meeting the writer gets mad and storms out. That night his body is found outside the back of Dev's store.
This is not good for Dev. Marshal Jake Del Vecchio both are two handsome suitors of Dev's and they will go out of their way to help her when she is threaten.
I got so tickled at the two handsome suitors of Dev's. They will make you laugh and you will feel sorry for them at the same time.
I loved this cozy mystery and I think the romance between Dev and her two suitors really made the book. Dec 27, Nora-adrienne rated it it was amazing Shelves: Jake and Noah are not only heating thing up for Dev but could end up slugging it out if Dev doesn't step up her game and make some hard choices.
The Murder of a local author out back of her store has Dev even busier when she decides that she's going to have to find the killer before he or she decides she's getting too involved.
This is most definitely the best book in the series to date and I hope the author who I really like keeps us glued to our seats with many more books in this series.
Mar 21, Nancy rated it it was amazing. Another great book from Denise Swanson. Gave us a twist and left with a cliff hanger. Hope the series continues as well as her Scumble River mysteries do.
Feb 28, Kristin rated it really liked it Shelves: I like this series. Probably more than I like the Scumbag River series. I found this is a fun and funny mystery, and has had me laughing.
With a good set of characters, in a well plotted and written mystery, that will keep you listening right until the end.
The narrator Maia Guest, makes this audiobook an enjoyable and smooth listen. I voluntarily giving an honest review an audio copy of this book for the author.
Jan 29, Fred rated it really liked it. Dev is getting ready to welcome the Stepping Out Book Club to here dime store.
It was with some trepidation that she is hosting them, another night away from her mother and that the president of the club is the principal, Mrs.
Ziegler, from her old high school. Ziegler has always been able to put the fear of God in Dev. The guest author for the first meeting is Mr.
Quistgaard, who will discuss his latest book of poetry about life in a small town and women. In this book of poetry, is quite malicious both to women in general and the people and life of small towns.
Needless to say, this doesn't go over well with the members of the book club. Three of the members have words with him and one storms out of the meeting.
The spells in the Book of the Dead depict Egyptian beliefs about the nature of death and the afterlife. The Book of the Dead is a vital source of information about Egyptian beliefs in this area.
One aspect of death was the disintegration of the various kheperu , or modes of existence. Mummification served to preserve and transform the physical body into sah , an idealised form with divine aspects; the Book of the Dead contained spells aimed at preserving the body of the deceased, which may have been recited during the process of mummification.
The ka , or life-force, remained in the tomb with the dead body, and required sustenance from offerings of food, water and incense.
In case priests or relatives failed to provide these offerings, Spell ensured the ka was satisfied. It was the ba , depicted as a human-headed bird, which could "go forth by day" from the tomb into the world; spells 61 and 89 acted to preserve it.
An akh was a blessed spirit with magical powers who would dwell among the gods. The nature of the afterlife which the dead person enjoyed is difficult to define, because of the differing traditions within Ancient Egyptian religion.
In the Book of the Dead , the dead were taken into the presence of the god Osiris , who was confined to the subterranean Duat.
There are also spells to enable the ba or akh of the dead to join Ra as he travelled the sky in his sun-barque, and help him fight off Apep.
There are fields, crops, oxen, people and waterways. The deceased person is shown encountering the Great Ennead , a group of gods, as well as his or her own parents.
While the depiction of the Field of Reeds is pleasant and plentiful, it is also clear that manual labour is required. For this reason burials included a number of statuettes named shabti , or later ushebti.
These statuettes were inscribed with a spell, also included in the Book of the Dead , requiring them to undertake any manual labour that might be the owner's duty in the afterlife.
The path to the afterlife as laid out in the Book of the Dead was a difficult one. The deceased was required to pass a series of gates, caverns and mounds guarded by supernatural creatures.
Their names—for instance, "He who lives on snakes" or "He who dances in blood"—are equally grotesque.
These creatures had to be pacified by reciting the appropriate spells included in the Book of the Dead ; once pacified they posed no further threat, and could even extend their protection to the dead person.
If all the obstacles of the Duat could be negotiated, the deceased would be judged in the "Weighing of the Heart" ritual, depicted in Spell The deceased was led by the god Anubis into the presence of Osiris.
There, the dead person swore that he had not committed any sin from a list of 42 sins , reciting a text known as the "Negative Confession".
Then the dead person's heart was weighed on a pair of scales, against the goddess Maat , who embodied truth and justice. Maat was often represented by an ostrich feather, the hieroglyphic sign for her name.
If the scales balanced, this meant the deceased had led a good life. Anubis would take them to Osiris and they would find their place in the afterlife, becoming maa-kheru , meaning "vindicated" or "true of voice".
This scene is remarkable not only for its vividness but as one of the few parts of the Book of the Dead with any explicit moral content.
The judgment of the dead and the Negative Confession were a representation of the conventional moral code which governed Egyptian society.
For every "I have not John Taylor points out the wording of Spells 30B and suggests a pragmatic approach to morality; by preventing the heart from contradicting him with any inconvenient truths, it seems that the deceased could enter the afterlife even if their life had not been entirely pure.
A Book of the Dead papyrus was produced to order by scribes. They were commissioned by people in preparation for their own funeral, or by the relatives of someone recently deceased.
They were expensive items; one source gives the price of a Book of the Dead scroll as one deben of silver, perhaps half the annual pay of a labourer.
In one case, a Book of the Dead was written on second-hand papyrus. Most owners of the Book of the Dead were evidently part of the social elite; they were initially reserved for the royal family, but later papyri are found in the tombs of scribes, priests and officials.
Most owners were men, and generally the vignettes included the owner's wife as well. Towards the beginning of the history of the Book of the Dead , there are roughly 10 copies belonging to men for every one for a woman.
The dimensions of a Book of the Dead could vary widely; the longest is 40m long while some are as short as 1m.
The scribes working on Book of the Dead papyri took more care over their work than those working on more mundane texts; care was taken to frame the text within margins, and to avoid writing on the joints between sheets.
The words peret em heru , or 'coming forth by day' sometimes appear on the reverse of the outer margin, perhaps acting as a label.
Books were often prefabricated in funerary workshops, with spaces being left for the name of the deceased to be written in later.
The text of a New Kingdom Book of the Dead was typically written in cursive hieroglyphs , most often from left to right, but also sometimes from right to left.
The hieroglyphs were in columns, which were separated by black lines — a similar arrangement to that used when hieroglyphs were carved on tomb walls or monuments.
This book is haunting, in so many good ways that to begin to list them will delay you from delving into the book sooner. Do yourself a favor and read this book, then let me know what you think.
One person found this helpful. One of Bear's more overlooked works - I highly recommend it if you're up for a well-written ghost story novella set in Los Angeles County.
This is a re-publication of this book that was originally published in I am glad that it is being re-introduced to readers. I buy quite a few of Greg Bear's books because the book summaries always sound so good whoever writes his summaries deserves a raise.
And then I end up usually being disappointed - always forgetting that hard science fiction is not my cup of tea. But not this time. This book is exceptionally good.
BUT it's not hard sci fi so that's probably the key. Peter Russell is 58 years old. He used to direct soft porn movies, has tried rather unsuccessfully being a writer and also failed as a husband.
He has been doing errands for his millionaire neighbors for quite a few years. But life has dumped a load of bad happenings on him over the last couple of years and when he's offered a job with a start-up tech company, he needs the money and the distraction.
But his troubles are far from over. I loved that book and periodically re-read it. But I liked this book - a lot. It is a creepy "what if" tale that had me turning on lights to chase away the shadows in the corners of the room.
I liked protagonist Russell. I liked the pacing of the story. Don't go into it expecting explanations of some of the happenings. Just relax and prepare to be disturbed.
A very well constructed novel within the genre of the macabre via the telling of a ghost story. Peter Russell was at one point a successful director of adult films until one of his two daughters was kidnapped and murdered.
That crime turned Peter into a person just able to eke out a small living by running errands for a California millionaire and having little interest in working for a better life.
A fortunate contact while waiting to talk to his employer introduces him to what the manufacturer describes as a device that will revolutionize the communications industry.
It is called "Trans" and is an exceptionally clear mobile device that can operate anywhere with an incredible low cost of operation.
Peter agrees to begin promoting "Trans" and he starts by using it for his own personal needs. Suddenly he begins to see his murdered daughter and hearing other disembodied voices.
The best part of Mr Bear's book is that given the fact of a new communication device somehow reaching out into other dimensions lends logic to the consequences of such an occurrence.
The pace of the book quickens as more and more events occur based on the technology of the "Trans" and make the book more science fiction than a tale of the supernatural designed with fright sequences to tantalize the reader.
But of course, Greg Bear's forte is within the world of science fiction and we have a good novel in that genre rather than one more ghost story.
I received a free electronic copy of this novel from Netgalley, Greg Bear, and Open Road Integrated Media in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you for sharing your hard work with me. This book was originally published by Ballantine Books in I am always tickled when I run across a Greg Bear novel - and am thrilled to see them being re-issued.
Thank you, Open Road Integrated Media, for keeping the oldie's but goodies accessible. This is not a Bear tale that I had run across before.
I can tell you that it is massively scary and a good bit funny, if you can laugh at yourself successfully.
We only look old on the outside, us boomer babies. Well, except for Michelle, but she had a deal going with the devil, I think. No one should look that good pushing I promise you that you will look at your convenient cell phone in a much different way in about 5 hours read time, and nothing about this tale is dated.Die Gewinn-Tabelle können Sie beispielsweise unten rechts öffnen.
